PCAF 2025: Market Day

Comic creators from across WA and beyond sell their original works at this lively community market. Casual and family friendly workshops also run all day.
All workshops are free to attended. Secure your spot by booking a ticket below.
Walk-ins are welcome on the day with limited capacity.

These events are part of the annual Perth Comic Arts Festival, a completely free to attend, volunteer run celebration of comics, their creators and readers.


SWORD AND SORCERY LIFE DRAWING

Location: State Library of WA – Theatrette
Date: Sunday 13th July
Time: 10:30am – 11:30am

Grab your pencil and get to work capturing the magic, mystique and majesty of our costumed models as you’re guided through the joys of life-drawing.You’ll learn the basics of figure drawing, costuming and rendering shape with light in this dynamic workshop.

ABOUT KATIE HOUGHTON-WARD:

Katie Houghton-Ward has been in the comic book industry for over 20 years and doesn’t plan to stop anytime soon.

After working with some independent US comic book publishers on various titles, Katie was approached by Heavy Metal magazine who optioned her creator owned series ‘Khulan’, which was published in serialised form in the magazine. 

Gestalt Publishing then collected the ‘Khulan’ series and, in turn, Katie started working with writer Gary Proudley as one of the artists on the sword and sorcery series, ‘Talgard’.

She is currently editing her finished Khulan graphic novel and working with Simon Bisley on preparing this for release later this year. 

Katie has just illustrated the first three issues of ‘Dark Heart’ for ‘INDIGIVERSE’ under Gestalt Publishing.


A LOO OF ONE’S OWN: BOOK LAUNCH

Join us for an outrageously hilarious and 100% true story time about toilets and democracy.

In 1943, the first two women were elected to the Australian parliament. Enid Lyons and Dorothy Tangney had very different political views, but they soon discovered they had at least one problem in common: none of the loos for elected officials in Parliament House were marked ‘Ladies’. 

Award-winning cartoonist Eleri Harris tackles an important moment in Australian history in a humorous and lighthearted way, illuminating themes of equality and accessibility for readers of all ages.

ABOUT ELERI HARRIS:

Eleri Harris is an award-winning cartoonist, journalist and editor working on Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country in Australia’s national capital. Her non-fiction history, science and reportage comics have been exhibited and published all over the world. A Loo of One’s Own is her first book for children.


BATTLE ROYALE

Location: State Library of WA – Theatrette

Four of the world’s best comics makers battle it out for your entertainment to decide who has the mightiest pen in town! Ridiculous challenges, unimaginable quests and unwinnable obstacles all stand between them and victory.

Featuring: Atsushi Kaneko, Lorena Alvarez, Declan Miller, Seraphina Newberry,  Nathanael Whale, Aude Yukiko and Campbell Whyte


COMICS ROULETTE

Location: State Library of WA – Theatrette
Date: Sunday 13th July
Time: 1:30pm – 2:30pm

It’s time to partner up for this great big comics collaboration that is guaranteed to take you some wacky hijinks. Teams will work quickly to see how they can make clear, easy to read comics that are bursting with energy and creativity.

Featuring: Max Loh and Oscar McKay

ABOUT MAX LOH:

Max Loh is a comics maker and voracious eater. His work frequently occupies the intersection of socio-political issues and food, and has been published by The Nib, Image Comics, Maplé Comics, and more. He is a founding member of UNNAMED, Comic Art Workshop alumni, and the co-author of the graphic novel, We’ll Eat When We’re Done with Dave Chua. His current mission during the weekend is to work on his book while hunting for the best Banh Mi in Singapore.

ABOUT OSCAR MCKAY:

Oscar is a queer comic creator from Boorloo/Perth that balances silliness and sincerity. They’ve published works about the rise of artificial intelligence, fighting one’s inner demons, wacky space adventures and how hot chips are really (really) good. They gravitate towards character-driven narratives and enjoy using fantastical elements as a way to approach difficult or complex subjects. They are also the 2025 recipient for the Perth Centre For Stories Comic Creator Hotdesk fellowship.


PAPER CRAFT COMICS

It’s time to learn how to make your stories pop off the page. Literally!

In this playful and experimental workshop, you’ll learn simple techniques to make paper craft comics. Fold, cut and assemble your comics in ways that will surprise the reader and reveal new depths to your stories.

ABOUT NINA DAKIN:

Nina Dakin is a Western Australian comic-maker, writer, illustrator and storyboard artist. She has a passion for illustration and storytelling, both in animation and comics. She has previously won the comic story award for her comic “The West Coast” in the Best Australian Yarn Competition, 2024, has had multiple works nominated for the Comic Art Award of Australia, and won the bronze Comic Art Award in 2022. Her comic work has been published in numerous anthologies, magazines and most recently the Westerly Journal. Within her story telling, Nina is drawn to whimsical and poetic storytelling focused themes of suburban nostalgia, cultural identity, and the fantastic weirdness of birds.
