PCAF 2025: Deep Dives

For a more hands-on experience, Perth Comic Arts Festival presents Deep Dive Workshops – an opportunity to learn from our invited guests in a smaller workshop environment. Spots are limited, so be sure to secure a ticket and don’t miss out!

This event is part of the annual Perth Comic Arts Festival, a completely free to attend, volunteer run celebration of comics, their creators and readers.


DEEP DIVE WITH ATSUSHI KANEKO

Location: Milktooth School of Art and Stories

Join legendary underground mangaka Atsushi Kaneko as he takes you on a journey through a series of activities to help you create captivating characters who conveys their personality and background at a glance. Kaneko holds a unique place in the world of manga, skillfully blending manga with American influences and an explosive punk spirit. 
This Deep Dive will provide a rare opportunity for local creators to learn from Kaneko’s technical skills and storytelling perspectives.
(Note: this is a hands-on workshop)

ABOUT ATSUSHI KANEKO:

Atsushi Kaneko is a manga artist. His alternative style distances him from mainstream manga.

His works include Bambi, SOIL, Wet Moon, Deathco, Search & Destroy, and EVOL. His manga have been translated and published in many countries, especially across Europe. SOIL won the prize for cartoonists at the St. Malo Literary Festival in France. Wet Moon won the French Comics Critics Award (ACBD Critic’s Prize). He also wrote and directed the anthology film Rampo Jigoku. In recent years, he has further expanded his activities as an artist, holding solo exhibitions.
His latest work EVOL is being adapted into a TV series, and distributed by DMM TV.


DEEP DIVE WITH LORENA ALVAREZ GÓMEZ

Join celebrated artist Lorena Alvarez Gómez as she takes you on a creative journey through colour, shape and storytelling as you design a character inspired by the world of fungus and seeds. Gómez’s work is loved the world over for its blend of vibrant imagery, charming characters and deeply moving stories.
This Deep Dive will provide a rare opportunity for local creators to get a better understanding of Gómez’s career, technical skills and processes.
(Note: this is a hands-on workshop)

ABOUT LORENA ALVAREZ GÓMEZ:

Lorena Alvarez Gómez was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia, and studied Graphic Design at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. She alternates her work as a freelance illustrator with writing and drawing her own stories, combining her interest in the interaction between arts and science, colour language, and graphic storytelling.

Lorena’s first comic Nightlights was nominated for two Eisner Awards in 2017. In 2019 she won the Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award with her second book Hicotea.

She’s currently working on the third book of the Nightlights series, already translated in five languages.
